Harrisonburg — the brewery capital
Four breweries sit within a few minutes of downtown, and two of them are an easy walk apart. If you only have one afternoon for Valley beer, spend it here.
Staunton
Staunton's beer stops are small and walkable — you can hit all three plus a cidery and a winery without moving your car.
Waynesboro
Waynesboro's two breweries are about five minutes apart and both sit near the Rockfish Gap entrance to the Blue Ridge Parkway — an easy post-hike stop.

Building the day
Three stops is the practical ceiling if you want to actually taste anything. Pick a single town — Harrisonburg and Staunton are both walkable — and let one person drive, or split the day: a morning hike, an afternoon taproom, dinner downtown.
- Harrisonburg to Waynesboro is about 30 minutes; Staunton to Waynesboro is about 15. Don't chain more than two towns in a day.
- Most Valley taprooms open around noon and close between 9 and 11 p.m.; smaller rural ones often close Monday and Tuesday.
- Food is inconsistent — Basic City and Three Notch'd have kitchens, several others rely on rotating food trucks. Check before you count on dinner.
- Almost every taproom here fills growlers and sells cans to go, which is the cheapest way to bring the Valley home.
Farm breweries: the Valley's real differentiator
Virginia's farm brewery license lets working farms brew and pour on site, using ingredients raised on the property. That's why Great Valley Farm Brewery and Swover Creek Farms feel different from an urban taproom — you're drinking beer on the land that produced part of it, usually with a view and space for kids to run. They keep shorter, more seasonal hours than town breweries, so check the day before you drive out.
