The cideries worth a stop
Old Hill Cider (Timberville)
A working orchard since 1965 and one of Virginia's most respected cideries. Their Yesteryear (heritage-apple blend) and Season's Finish (barrel-aged) are the things to try. Tasting room is small but the orchard views are big.
Showalter's Orchard & Greenhouse (Timberville)
Family-run orchard, cidery, and farm market all in one. The Hard Cider Series rotates seasonally; pick-your-own apples September–October. Combine with Old Hill — they're 10 minutes apart.
Winchester Ciderworks (Winchester)
Tucked in the apple country north of the city. Their Malice (semi-dry) is the Valley's most-awarded cider. Tasting room is open Friday–Sunday.
Big Fish Cider (Monterey)
Worth the drive over the mountain to Highland County. Cellar-aged, often barrel-fermented ciders that drink more like wine than what you'd expect.
Bold Rock Cider (Nellysford)
Just over the Blue Ridge from the Valley, but a worthwhile add-on to a Wintergreen or Charlottesville trip. The largest cidery operation in the region.

Picking seasons shift with the weather every year, so call or check social media the week you plan to go — a late frost or an early heat wave can move a harvest by two weeks.
What the apple calendar actually looks like
- Late April: apple blossom, the one week the orchards around Winchester bloom at once.
- June–July: cherries, then peaches at the Frederick and Rockingham County orchards.
- Mid-August: first early apples, usually Ginger Gold and Gala.
- September: the main event — Honeycrisp, Jonagold, and the busiest pick-your-own weekends.
- October: Fuji, Stayman, Winesap, plus pumpkins and cider doughnuts at nearly every farm market.
- Late October–November: Pink Lady and Granny Smith close out the season; cideries shift to fresh-pressed releases.
The apple-blossom drive
For roughly one week in late April, the orchards around Winchester bloom white and pink at once — the original reason the Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival exists, running since 1924. Drive Route 11 north of Winchester or the back roads through Frederick County in the last week of April for the show. Bloom timing swings a week either direction depending on the winter, so watch local orchard pages rather than booking months ahead.
How to build the day
Two cideries plus one orchard or farm-market stop is the right pace. Old Hill and Showalter's are about 10 minutes apart in Timberville, which makes the tightest loop in the Valley — add Mt. Crawford Creamery on the way back for anyone under 12. In the north, pair Winchester Ciderworks with Richard's Fruit Market or Virginia Farm Market and finish with dinner in Old Town Winchester. If you're already in Staunton, Ciders From Mars needs no driving at all.
- Most cider tasting rooms keep Friday–Sunday hours; weekday visits often need an appointment.
- Pick-your-own fields close when they're picked out, sometimes by early afternoon on October Saturdays. Go in the morning.
- Bring cash — a few of the smaller farm stands are still cash-only.
- Hard cider is taxed and sold like wine in Virginia, so most cideries can ship or sell bottles to go.
