Shenandoah National Park stretches roughly 105 miles along the spine of the Blue Ridge in northwestern Virginia. Skyline Drive runs the full length, and more than 500 miles of trails — including a long stretch of the Appalachian Trail — branch off from its 75 overlooks. The four districts (and which one to pick)
The park is divided into four districts along Skyline Drive. Picking the right one for your time and stamina matters more than people expect.
North District (mile 0 – 31.5)
Closest to Front Royal and Washington DC. Quieter, lower-elevation forests, and the easiest day trip from the metro. Good for: Compton Peak, Mathews Arm, and a relaxed first visit.
Central District (mile 31.5 – 65.5)
The headline district. Big Meadows, Skyland, and the most famous hikes — Old Rag, Hawksbill, Stony Man, and Dark Hollow Falls. If you only have one day, come here.
South District (mile 65.5 – 105)
Less crowded, big views, and the trailheads for Riprap and Jones Run / Doyles River. Best paired with a stay in Waynesboro or Charlottesville.
Best hikes by effort level
Easy (under 2 miles, family-friendly)
- Stony Man — 1.6 mi round-trip to one of the highest viewpoints in the park.
- Blackrock Summit — 1 mi loop in the South District over a quartzite boulder field.
- Limberlost Trail — 1.3 mi accessible loop near Skyland.
Moderate (2 – 5 miles)
- Dark Hollow Falls — 1.4 mi out-and-back to a 70-ft waterfall (steep return climb).
- Hawksbill Summit — 2.9 mi loop to the park's highest point at 4,051 ft.
- Bearfence Mountain — 1.2 mi with a short rock scramble and 360° views.
Strenuous (5+ miles, full day)
- Old Rag Mountain — 9.4 mi circuit with a famous rock scramble (timed-entry ticket required March–November).
- Whiteoak Canyon to Cedar Run — 7.3 mi loop past six waterfalls.
- Riprap–Wildcat Ridge — 9.8 mi backcountry loop with swimming holes.
Entrance fees, hours, and what's open
A standard vehicle pass is $30 and covers seven consecutive days. An annual Shenandoah pass is $55, and the America the Beautiful pass ($80) covers Shenandoah and every other national park for a year. The park is open 24 / 7 / 365, but Skyline Drive closes for snow and ice — check current conditions on the NPS website before driving up.
Old Rag requires a separate $1 day-use ticket from March through November. Reserve at recreation.gov well in advance for weekends.
When to visit
Fall foliage (mid-October to early November) is the most popular and the most crowded — expect parking lots full by 9 a.m. on weekends. Spring wildflowers peak in late April and early May. Summer is the best time for waterfalls, but afternoon thunderstorms are common. Winter is the quietest season; Skyline Drive may be closed but the lower trails stay open.
Where to stay
In-park lodging at Skyland and Big Meadows books out months ahead for fall weekends. Outside the park, base in Luray (closest to the Central District), Front Royal (North District), Waynesboro (South District), or Harrisonburg if you want a college-town food scene.
