When should I book a Shenandoah campsite?
Book Shenandoah National Park campsites the day reservations open — 6 months ahead — if you want a weekend in October. Summer weekends usually fill 2–3 months out. Weekdays at NPS, USFS, and state park campgrounds are often available within a week or two.
Foliage season (mid-October to early November)
This is the hardest window in the Valley. NPS campgrounds (especially Big Meadows) and the lodges sell out within hours of the 6-month booking window opening. Have Recreation.gov open at 10:00 AM Eastern on the day your dates open.
Summer weekends
Memorial Day through Labor Day weekends at popular campgrounds fill 2–3 months ahead. Mid-week (Sun–Thu) almost always has availability inside of two weeks.
Best last-minute bets
Lewis Mountain in Shenandoah NP is first-come, first-served — show up by 11 AM on a weekend. USFS dispersed sites are always free and never reserved.
