What's the best time of year to visit the Shenandoah Valley?
October is the most popular month for the Shenandoah Valley thanks to peak fall foliage along Skyline Drive, but late April through early June offers the best combination of mild weather, wildflowers, and lower crowds. July and August are warm and festival-heavy; January and February are the quietest.
Spring (April – early June)
Local favorite. Waterfalls run full, wildflowers (bluebells, trillium) carpet the lower trails, and weekends are noticeably quieter than fall. Pack layers — ridgetops can still be 20°F colder than the Valley floor.
Summer (June – August)
Festival season. Warm in the Valley (high 80s) but cool on Skyline Drive. Expect afternoon thunderstorms and book lodging early for any festival weekend.
Fall (mid-September – early November)
The most-visited season. Foliage typically peaks mid-to-late October at high elevations and early November in the Valley. Weekends sell out — book lodging 2–3 months out.
Winter (December – February)
Quiet, cheap, and underrated. Skyline Drive partially closes for ice, but Valley towns stay open and most museums, breweries, and restaurants are wide open. Massanutten runs the only lift-served skiing.
