Is Shenandoah National Park the same as the Shenandoah Valley?
No. Shenandoah National Park sits on top of the Blue Ridge Mountains — the eastern wall above the Valley. The Shenandoah Valley itself is the farmland and towns below the ridge to the west. You drive up out of the Valley to enter the Park.
What the Park is
200,000 acres of protected ridge along the Blue Ridge, threaded by Skyline Drive and the Appalachian Trail. Day-use entry costs $30 per vehicle. Camping, lodges, and most hiking happen here.
What the Valley is
The much larger region below — cities, farms, wineries, breweries, historic sites, the I-81 corridor, and most of the lodging. Free to enter. The Park is essentially one long natural amenity at the eastern edge of the Valley.
