When is the best time to camp in the Shenandoah Valley?
The best camping weather in the Shenandoah Valley is late May through June and early September through the first week of October — mild days, cool nights, fewer bugs than peak summer, and lighter crowds than the foliage rush.
Spring (April–June)
Waterfalls run full, wildflowers peak in May, and crowds are light. Bring a real sleeping bag — Skyline Drive elevations can drop into the 30s at night well into May.
Summer (July–August)
Warm, often humid in the Valley floor, but the ridges stay 10–15°F cooler. Afternoon thunderstorms are common — set up tarps and stake out tents well.
Fall (September–November)
Early September is one of the year's most underrated camping windows. Foliage hits in mid-October through early November — gorgeous but extremely crowded; book months ahead.
Winter (December–March)
Most NPS and USFS campgrounds close November through March. State parks and a handful of private RV parks stay open, but expect freezing nights and possible snow at elevation.
